What Kind of Car is Right for an Island?

Even if you live on an island as a Honolulu native, you will still probably need a car, and in order to buy a car, you will most likely need a low interest auto loan. The island of Oahu, home to the state capital of Honolulu is almost 600 square miles while the Big Island has more than 4,000 square miles.

That is enough space that you might regret not having a car to help you move around. So, when you are considering what car to buy, there are a couple things you should take into consideration. Here are five things brought to you by Honolulu Banking Rates that you should consider before purchasing a car.

Can you order it? Hawaii really is not a big place, and there are only a couple different car dealerships there. If the company does not already have the car on location, then they will have to special order and ship it to the island. This could be more expensive than you previously anticipated, so check the prices before you even consider ordering a car to the island.

Not a full size truck. On a small island, it becomes difficult to find parking spots which will fit your enormous truck. Some parking garages will not even fit a full-sized truck. Unless you need it for work, it is wise to steer away from this vehicle option.

A small, gas-efficient car. Something like a Pruis, Smart Car, Mini Cooper, Jetta, or similarly sized vehicle can help you see all the sights of Hawaii, while saving you gas money and letting you fit in parking spots other large cars might not make it into. Keep in mind that these cars do not have a lot of storage space though, which could be useful for toting guests around or making large purchases.

Something good for exploring. This might be something you can go off-road exploring in or a car that makes you feel like you are part of a jungle adventure. A Jeep or SUV might be more appropriate for this. If you just want a car that will be nice to drive around in, you might consider a convertible, so you can feel that Hawaiian sunshine as you drive.

The ultimate beach mobile. If you need to drive to the beach and are a fanatic, you are going to want a vehicle that can handle transporting all your stuff. That might include beach chairs, a cooler, wetsuits, boogie boards, surf boards, extra clothing, big fluffy beach towels, jug of water, snacks, beach toys, reading material, and a lot of sunscreen. You might want to consider a car with a roof rack, a van, a smaller truck, or a station wagon.

Once you decide what kind of car you want, let Honolulu Banking Rates help you find the best auto loan rates to help you finance your purchase.
